Esther and her mom wave goodbye to him as he pulled off the driveway. As Esther went to bed she heard her mom on a phone call with someone.
"I'm sorry we tried to save him but he's gone" The person on the phone said
"No, nononono, there has to be a mistake." Esther's mom said in confusion and shock

That day Esther's life completely changed.

At this point Esther was used to it her mom did this every time she drank to make her pain from her father dying go away.
