On Kavulum 1st, the Sorting Ceremony placed all the Elves that had turned sixteen into the jobs they would perform for the rest of their lives. The ceremony was meant to be fair and unbiased, but that was never the case. Bribery was considered tradition amongst the highest class, and bets were placed as to which young, unsuspecting Elf would have their world shatter. Kylin Naexi Nerithyra was the daughter of Gaelin Sinaht Nerithyra, one of the wealthiest businessmen in the cavern. She lived in the lap of luxury, which made her stuck-up and vain, too obsessed with status to be liked. Aerilaya Allannia Aeroris was the complete opposite. She was a Gadohi, which were considered worse than scum. She had to hunt, farm, and forage alongside the rest of her large family to get by, along with providing food for the cavern. Her parents raised her well, making her humble and kind, only taking what was necessary and putting everything to use. When Kylin was that poor unsuspecting Elf, she saw the other side of the coin. But Kylin has always been stubborn, and that can be her downfall. Especially when war comes knocking.

Some say that everyone's fate is already determined. If that's the case, Estelle Marzena is greatly disappointed with hers. Her greatest dream is to participate in the Illyrian Blood Rite and become a Carynthian warrior, like so many in her family. She has been training for the Rite her entire life, and yet, she continues to be told that she isn't ready. Estelle must find a way to prove her skills to her mentors so that she can prove her skills to the world, and she might have unwittingly stumbled across a way to do that. Being the bastard son of the High Lord of Dawn isn't something Mikael Anik takes lightly. Despite his parents' love and acceptance, Mikael continued to feel the pressure and unease of his people. His birth parents never married and he is a Peregryn halfbreed, the likes of which had never become a High Lord before. Mikael is devoted to proving himself to both his fathers and his people, but can he do that and deal with a surprisingly irritating Shadowsinger at the same time?
