Oralie's world was gone. All she could do was put one step in front of the other, desperately hoping everything she'd ever worked for was not for nothing. She was drowning, but it didn't matter. None of it mattered. Because he was gone.

Oralie always thought she'd step down with Kenric once this was all over. She'd spend the rest of her life with him. It never occurred to her that by the time this ended, he'd be gone. Now she's falling apart, and no one's there to pick up the pieces. But when a showdown with the Neverseen reveals their possession of a hostage that could throw the Lost Cities into chaos, she's torn once more between her duties and her love.
The whole world is depending on her to do the right thing.
But he is her whole world.
