She was the daughter of a high ranked general, who happened to be the Fire Lord's son's most trusted soldier. Due to her father's close bond with the heir of the Fire Nation, she was sent to live with the royal family following her mother's passing and her father being sent out to fight in the century old war.
Having at first had many doubts about living in the royal palace, she soon became used to the environment; though her fear for the Fire Lord was constant. She grew close to a certain prince, who would soon become her best friend, while having a very love/hate relationship with his sister and her friends. These were the only people she ever knew her age, the closest people she had to friends.
She was banished along with the Prince, for protecting him in the Agni Kai against his father. But as time went on, her secret was exposed, and many bonds would be broken.
Scars are not just physical.

Fire Lord Ozai discovered her Air Nomad origins and he imprisoned her for three years. She got to meet the royal family before it was broken. When she managed to escape she ran away to the Water Tribes. She had been there ever since, protecting the defenseless people from the ruthless Fire benders as well as her bending. A new Air Bender appears, and it didn't take long when a Fire Navy ship arrived the deserted icy lands of the South. When events lead to Kadia being captured by the fire nation Prince she realises that although Fire and Water are often referred to as opposites, they might not be so different after all. Kadia learns to realises that the many lessons she learnt growing up where nothing but prejudice. Or where they? Can she get over her emotional scars and learn to heal? Or was everything she witnessed an elaborate act all along made by the fire prince and his uncle? An act to trick her in letting her guard down and betray her siblings and the Avatar. The people in the colonies do not, hatred starts to grow in their hearts. The Avarar will need the help of a companion more than any other time, and there is no better person to aid him than the secret waterbender that's part of the Fire Nation fleet, the woman who risked her own life to get him to safety, even though this had been the first time they had met in their lives.
