It is mentioned at one point that Sesshomaru and Rin were like Toga and Izayoi, so I figured she grew up with him protecting her. I've always fallen for older guys and liked the friends-to-lovers tropes, so this will hit both of those. I've tried to include little Easter eggs and nods to Inuyasha and Yashahime.
