Ember's life was destroyed by the very thing she has power over. To her, her flame is a curse in which she is forced to use. Aither on the other hand, had run away from abusive parents and holds all to many secrets. His wind is something of a gift to him.
Cordelia lost her memory to the ocean, the very thing that took her back to the only home she knew. She lived alone and her element, water, is something she thinks of as a regret. Flint finds his element a mystery, controlling earth he could feel every being as if it were crawling on his own skin.
They are all forced to use their powers to save the pure existence of life. Death wishes to overtake the world and the only thing that can stop him is his equal. Ember, Aither, Cori, and Flint need to find Death's equal before he claims their souls.
