In Book 5, Max must find the other half of the Enchanted Whistle in order to bring the province of Celio back into the Empire and to break his love interest Jessica's engagement to Count Ludwig. At the same time, he must ensure that the new Matriarch will give him an annulment from his engagement to the manipulative Princess Sanchia. 

In the meantime, the ancient Holy Universal Church is still embroiled in civil war at the same time as they begin a Matriarchal Conclave to elect another Matriarch.
