In Book 7, Max is excommunicated by the Matriarch because he refused to send her tribute. Locked in a power struggle with the Head of the Holy Universal Church, he desperately wants to have his excommunication lifted and then to limit the Matriarch's powers by moving her down the Order of Precedence.

Meanwhile, Irina the Magician intensifies her assassination attempts on the Emperor and Jessica practices the qinee in order to break out of the prison that Sanchia had locked her in.

Later, the Archbishop advises the Emperor to retrieve a mystical item that would force the Matriarch to back down, but the journey is dangerous, for the item is guarded by ancient demons that lurk deep in the Enchanted Forest of Magicka.

Or Max be able to get the Matriarch to lift his excommunication, thereby preventing further rioting and ultimately his deposition, or will he be deposed as Emperor of Occultoria after such a short reign?
