Akeiva woke in a cold sweat. He was lying on his stomach, no longer on the rough sand of a beach, but on something soft and warm. A blanket. Blinking, then noticing his left eye was swollen shut, he struggled to sit up. His vison was blurry, and he couldn't make out anything besides shapes in front of him. Everything from his head to the tip of his wings ached.
"Ah, I see Sleeping Beauty has awaken," a gruff voice sounded from nearby. He rubbed his right eye viscously. The world started to come into focus. A tall, buff and slightly fuzzy man sat a few feet away in a red chair. At least, he thought it was a few feet. When everything became clear, the man was actually much farther away. He had a bushy white heard, similar to what mortals would compare to a man called Saint Nicholas. Protruding from his surprisingly tame and slicked back hair, two thick and curled horns.
"Didn't think ya where gonna make it there for awhile, kid," he said, giving a sly smile, "But ya brother said you'd pull through." Akeiva stared at him. The room they sat in had bookshelves on almost every wall, but no books filled them. Instead, crinkled papers, skulls of various animals, and weapons such as knives, bows and pistols.
"Wherema- wherema at?" Akeiva's words slurred and he whipped his head around, too fast.
"Don't you worry bout that, kid. Found you and ya brother passed out by the lake," the man said.
The lake. A chill swept down his spine. Flashes of heat, then cold, then heat, overcame him.
As desperatly as he wanted to remember exactly how he'd gotten to the lake's shore, he even more desperatly wanted to forget why he'd gotten there.
