In the far reaches of the cosmos lies the Jaago System, a cluster of six planets bound together by fragile peace and a crumbling alliance. On the lush, floating island dotted planet of Brenon X, sixteen-year-old Jasstan Gerdurr fights to survive, an orphan after his parents murder. Homeless and bitter, Jasstan scavenges the red ferns that power the floating cities above, unaware that deep within him lies an untamed power that could alter the course of the galaxy.

When a monstrous sea creature attacks, Jasstan's left eye ignites with a brilliant green light-granting him control over space itself. His awakening draws the attention of Cotaar Beran, a legendary wolf-like Oculus who has lived in hiding since the purges began. Cotaar offers Jasstan guidance and reveals the truth: his parents were killed by an Oculus for creating weapons that would kill their kind.

Meanwhile war arrives in the form of the Toscothians -an invading race of four-armed, violet-skinned warriors who wield invisibility technology and subjugate entire colonies.
