My name is Hibiscus Brown, my best friend is a unicorn and my life is going absolutely nowhere. Oh, and I'm a witch. At least partly - the rest is all werewolf. When I was a little girl, I believed in fairy tales. I believed in princes and princesses and knights in shining armor. I believed in forever and happily ever afters. I was ten when reality hit me. My mom brought the evil home with her and there was no escaping it. That's when I learned that fairy tales were just that: fairy tales. The bad stuff is real, though. The difference is that I now know that the monsters and evil villains don't always wear capes and ugly scars. No: most of the time, they appear normal. I'm drowning in reality, in my life, and I've given up hope that a knight in shining armor will rescue me. But maybe... maybe I don't need a Prince Charming after all. Caroline loves her new friend Lily. They do almost everything together. But as time goes on, it becomes more and more apparent that Lily is not everything she seems to be. Where did Lily come from, what is she hiding, and what's the real reason for their intense friendship? For those of you who are already familiar with my writing, I should let you know that this short story is nothing like anything else I've written. I wrote it as a birthday gift for a ten-year-old girl. She devoured the whole thing in couple of hours and when she finished, she told me she loved it. This ten-year-old girl is very girly, she likes unicorns and rainbows and magical worlds, but she also likes Sci-Fi and scary, threatening bad guys. As a result, the genre of this book is quite niche, and it may not be appropriate for every ten-year-old. There are some confrontations I would categorise as "mild peril." Spoiler Alert: If you're a parent looking for something for a child of a similar age, there are two deaths in this book and so you may want to check it out first because I recognise every child is different. (The girl I wrote is for said they weren't graphic deaths, and she was fine with both in the context of the story.) And more like Cinderella, a poor and alone girl that become a slave by her step mother and step sisters. But in the end Cinderella still found her prince and live happily ever after. But in this story, is it really true that all of us have our own prince charming? Is it true that every story has a happily ever after in the end?
