After the death of Lao Su Er's older sister, he is visited by her spirit and is told to hide her identity, for she had passed away with no one knowing- not even their parents or servants knew.
Thus, because they were twins, Su Er knows he must hide his male identity and become Xu Er for his late sister's sake.
