Looking down at the Earth from one of the small Walden windows on the Colony was heartbreaking. All his life, Percy Jackson had spent every waking moment wishing that he was down there. Even his dreams were filled with visions of the vast beaches and beautiful forests that must have filled the planet. For centuries, what was left of the human race had lived in space, circling around the dead planet that they used to call home. All Percy had ever known was the desolate interior of his ship, Walden. The strict rules of the Gaia Doctrine had governed him since he was born, and he knew that they would continue to keep him help captive until the day he died. But even though he knew that Earth was both out of his reach, and his wrists were shackled together to keep him from it, he couldn't help but impossibly wish with all he had that, someday, he would get to go back to the sea.

When Percy is imprisoned for violating the laws of the Colony, he is devastated. Not only is there no window in his cell to look down at the Earth from, but his 18th birthday is also right around the corner, and he knows that there's nothing that he can do to keep from being floated. But just as he braces for the needle to pierce his skin, he's dragged into the best opportunity of his life. To become one of the 100.
