Thomas Jefferson, pissed at his secret being spilled, blamed John for what happened, saying if he hid his diary better, nobody would've found out. 

For this, Thomas sent John to prison. Where he was kept for four years. Until Thomas made up his mind to execute him.

Thomas regretted it when John was about to be killed. Instead, he brought John to live in the White House with him.
