Mature
When recovering alcoholic Emma Farouk's violent ex-lover demands custody of their disabled daughter, she can only trust herself to protect her child - if she can resist the temptation to take one more drink.

The overall inspiration for this story was a woman who was both a talented poet and afflicted with fetal alcohol syndrome, who I met through a writing workshop. I've tried to give Suzy the the loving mother J. never had and provided readers with a window into the world of people with FAS. As well as, of course, a rip-roaring reading experience. Gradually, more characters found their way in -- the identity thief from "Eight Seconds," and the concerned but deeply flawed father of "Trace," both short stories also published here on Wattpad. (Caution -- spoiler alert!)

And finally -- I hope you enjoy the evocative cover art by Miguel Muñoz Hierro from Pixabay.

Looking to the left I see a small girl behind Ellie. The child can't see me but, that doesn't stop me from looking at her. Holy shit, she has my eyes. How in the hell does she have my eyes? She looks just like Ellie, from her brown hair to her tan skin, to the way she talks. How is this possible? Looking down I see my daughter raise up and kiss Ellie on the cheek and saying "Promise!" while smiling. My heart stops as my eyes fill with tears. She talks just like Ellie, she smiles just like Ellie. Ellie sits beside her and watches her fall asleep before turning around. She has major explaining to do. "You...we...I... have children, you didn't tell me?" is the only thing I can rasp out with tears threatening to escape my eyes. The only thing I have cried for is Ellie but, right now I want to cry for my kids. I know they are mine, in my gut I know it.

This is my original story. Please do not steal. Sequel to First Catch. Melanie and Anthony have slowly been letting each other into their lives bit by bit. Anthony had somehow found a way of breaking down the walls Melanie had tried so hard to build up. And kept her from letting anyone in. Melanie is now pregnant with Anthony's child. She has been battling her feelings of guilt, as it still hasn't been all that long since losing her husband Paul in the car accident. Afraid of losing Anthony. Melanie at first pretended like she cared for the man. So he wouldn't run away from her. So she wouldn't lose him like she lost Paul. But she was only kidding herself. As time goes on. Melanie begins to realize she develops feelings for the man, no matter how hard she tried not to. That she could possibly love him. Melanie realized in her scheme of things. She no longer was pretending. And she couldn't exactly hide her feelings any longer. As she knew Anthony was becoming aware of this. Melanie becomes frightened. And the fear allows for Melanie to keep pushing Anthony away. In Melanie's subconscious, she knows Anthony somehow always chooses to come back. After all. He told her he'd wait for however long it took. So Melanie just assumed. She'd always have that to fall back on. She assumed Anthony would always stay true to his words. But how many times will Anthony keep running back? How many times will Anthony allow himself to be dragged around. Before he's finally decided he's had enough? Will Melanie choose before it's too late and she loses Anthony for good?
