Happily ever after was impossible for the Cullens with the Volturi lurking. A newcomer to Forks slapped them with that reality check.
Melanie Strider, a half-vampire, was the prime suspect for a massacre near La Push. The Cullens are put into a position to watch over her and must protect their secret, while promoted Captain of Forks PD, Charlie Swan, investigates the murders.
Tensions are high in Forks. The wolves demand a retaliation. The Cullens are once again threatened by the Volturi. Alliances become strained and Melanie has to confront the past she fled. When immortals are at war, nobody is safe. They are caught in a rip tide of suspicion and old grudges.
