Being in a strict, religious, conservative family doesn't always make a kid an ideal person. And most of the times it's the exact opposite. Sam is one of the victim of such family, and he's trying his hardest to change his mindset and manner to be like what he thought was a normal lifestyle for kids his age.  
Without knowing certainly which is good or bad, he started to learn the world by himself with his own subjective morality view.
