Leila Rizzo struggles with depression every day of her existence. Some days are better than others. The day of her accident is fuzzy. What isn't fuzzy is the incredible will to live. She should have died that night.
Her recovery has been slow. Finally, she is permitted to return to school. On the first day of class, she is informed she will have to do a genealogy project. A detailed family tree and she must trace back to the first ancestor to step foot on U.S soil. Right away Leila is set against it. 
For good reason.
She doesn't know her biological father's family. A father she's never known. A father died before she was born.
Leila tussles with her emotions.
While she's searching for a family she's never known, it becomes painfully obvious the family she has always known is in danger.
