Three elite teens are picked to compete in the Running. Neither one can afford to lose but only one can win. Axel, a kid who comes from a line of victors of the Running needs to win for his family. He can't escape his reality anymore. He was trained and tutored his whole life to be in the challenges of the Running. However, he faces the Running against Camille, a teenage girl from one of the richest families in the Clusters. She is cunning and needs to win to gain popularity again with the townies in order to save her family from losing all of the riches that they have spent decades accumulating. She was never trained to win but she has never lost anything yet. Then there is Enzo, a teenage boy with nothing to lose but has everything to gain. His family wasn't fortunate and he was born in one of the towns outside of the Cluster. His dad worked all his life supplying for a watcher living in the Cluster. However, when their watcher died, he had no heirs to his riches and status. He left it all behind for his best friend and his best worker. Enzo's life changed in one day. Who will win and become one of the governing counsel of the clusters? Read and find out to see.

On the way to take her placement test she sees a man take a gun out of his bag. Panicked, she reaches into her purse for her phone to call 911. Instead she takes out a gun. She doesn't know where it came from or how it got there, but when the man turns his gun on her she shoots him. It would be easy for Evita to forget about where the gun came from and let her life return to normal, but its mysterious appearance won't stop nagging at her. When Evita starts asking questions Evelyn Sheer, the head of the city's Department of Energy, takes her captive and places her in a secret, underground research facility. Evelyn Sheer and the researchers are trying to create a genetic modification that enables humans to photosynthesize. Once in the facility, Evita is tagged as a test subject and loses all say over what happens to her body. She has to escape. By the time she comes up with a plan there is only one problem. Evita isn't ready to leave.
