If you never had anything, you'd never have anything to loose. That's what 18 year old Scarlett thought, as least until she moved in with her new adoptive family, the Da Vinchi's. 
Being left alone at the age of 7 when her parents died, Scarlett learned to depend on herself, and only herself. She's been bounced from home to home, usually too much for anyone to stand for more that a few weeks. The state of California won't let her go off on her own, even at 18, because they believe she's a problem to the outside world. She's been though it all, and she's sure this family will be just like the countless others. She really has no idea who she's dealing with.
