Somewhere out there in the future, Ben Harris is writing a bunch of letters to his daughter explaining of her heritage and the life he had before and during the time that she was born. He explains the life she never knew about and what led to the decisions he made to keep her safe from harm. As Ben writes these letters, memories are shown of what happened during each critical stage of his and his daughter's lives that he writes about. He explores his past relationship, the torment and abuse he suffered and how he got away from that life to start fresh with his daughter. Some of the revelations he tells will shock her, some will hurt her and some will astonish her. But at the end of it all, he will make sure that she knows his love for her is what pushed him to make their lives what they are today.
