In the greatest chess game in the galaxy, a new move has just become possible...

Queen Jessamine Tarquin and her children are visiting Indigo, an ocean planet in the Kingdom of the Pleiades. They are looking forward to a relaxing holiday and to enjoying a local festival. But when a secret hidden by one of their ancestors is suddenly revealed, Lord Damon Blackstar is presented with a golden new opportunity to force Jessamine to abdicate and place someone he can control on the throne.

Jessamine's children, Alex and his sisters Alice and Ellen, and their bodyguard Captain Zachary, with help from their favourite relative and their school friends, have one week to do two things. They must follow and solve a trail of clues left by their ancestor across Indigo to stop Lord Blackstar, and ensure the festival can begin on schedule by staging a Shakespeare play. Even with help from unexpected sources, it is going to be a long week until the curtain rises.

❖ Interstellar pilot and ex-adventurer Alex Gallegos must keep their team safe on an icy moon as sentient storms threaten to repeat the tragedy that ended their last career. ❖ Everyone in the United Inhabited Solar Systems (for some reason, UIS for short) knows to stay away from Mahaha. The icy moon is notorious for failed probe landings and research missions that end in tragedy: the only people to ever venture to its surface needed rescuing after just two weeks. When a prestigious research group decides they want a turn, they ask Alex Gallegos to lead the team. Perfectly qualified and haunted by their past, Alex accepts, hoping to make up for old mistakes and get just a little further from the earth they've left behind. Two months into the seven-month mission, the team is struggling with discontent, damaged equipment, and blizzards acting less and less like normal weather. As Mahaha moves out of range of help and the storms take on a more malicious character, Alex must face the one foe they could never have prepared for. Mahaha may or may not be alive. ❖❖❖ Complete. Wattys 2021 Shortlister. Standalone sequel (Rocks Can Dance) coming in 2023. Comments and critiques are both welcome and appreciated. I write characters from many different backgrounds, with many different experiences. If you share those traits and find that I have misrepresented anything, please let me know! "We are but one story, one blink between the stars." Gallivanters are the galaxy's most notorious heroes. Bound by code and honor, they pledge themselves to defend the weak, rescue the lost, and protect the helpless. At least, that's what Ionia is hoping. Her planet kingdom is in a state of peril; plagued by a disease that hasn't been seen for a hundred years, she is the piece of resistance to finding a cure, a pawn to be traded off for the greater good. A hero is exactly what she needs to find a different way to save her people. So with only a child's fairy tale and a need for freedom, she and the gallivanter Carson must embark upon a quest to find a race of people long believed to be dead, who may or may not know the location of an ancient treasure. Ionia's hope is that it can be used as a pawn instead of her own life; that is, if they can find it in time. Their quest will bring them all manner of trouble: wars, love, magic itself, and the ever-pressing thought that maybe the story in Ionia's book really is just a work of fiction.
