You see, the island of Roanoke had been a site for magic since before time was even born. Faeries used it as a rest stop, and selkies lounged on its shores. Every 500 years was a gathering of a representative of each family of fae. Witches, warlocks, fairy doctors and more were invited to the party. The revelry would last for a month. It was simply due to bad timing that the colonizers had been there. You see, the fae see humans as below them. Which is entirely fair, considering that humans have lower intelligence levels on average and no magic. The men and women of Roanoke were taken to become slaves and children who had not gone through puberty were adopted into fae families where they took part in blood ceremonies and became fae themselves. The fae carved one, cryptic word into a nearby tree. Croatoan. And in this way, they have managed to confuse the humans for hundreds of years, creating the legacy of one of the greatest mysteries of the North Americas.
