The Garmadon family has spent the past year living in solitude, taking the time they need to adjust to their new lives together. The ninja, still led by Sensei Wu, have become teachers, spreading their wisdom and experience to a new generation. With Ninjago City rebuilt into a technological utopia, and with the Overlord defeated, their seems to be no need for heroes anymore.
Until it is revealed that the Overlord has not been killed, and that there is a darkness stirring in Ninjago, one that will not be defeated so easily as it was previously. The ninja soon find themselves battling darkness and technology, out of their element and hopelessly outnumbered- but they are heroes, after all. This is what they do.

Everyone is happy again, but the darkness that was in Garmadon finds its way to Lloyd which causes him to slowly become meaner and more emo. The darkness takes full control of Lloyd and makes him just as evil as his dad, but more powerful since he is still the Green Ninja. The rest of the team is left to figure out who and or what is powerful enough to destroy the evilness in him without harming their friend.
