The Garmadon family has spent the past year living in solitude, taking the time they need to adjust to their new lives together. The ninja, still led by Sensei Wu, have become teachers, spreading their wisdom and experience to a new generation. With Ninjago City rebuilt into a technological utopia, and with the Overlord defeated, their seems to be no need for heroes anymore.
Until it is revealed that the Overlord has not been killed, and that there is a darkness stirring in Ninjago, one that will not be defeated so easily as it was previously. The ninja soon find themselves battling darkness and technology, out of their element and hopelessly outnumbered- but they are heroes, after all. This is what they do.

While the team is split when Lloyd is possessed, losing their powers in the process, a new ninja goes under training to unlock her elemental powers. Friends around her give her encouragement and hope as she gets closer and closer to unlocking her true potential. But what of the ninja? Will they be able to stop Morro from achieving his goal? The ninja finally defeats Lord Garmadon and Lloyd gets his dad back. Everyone is happy again, but the darkness that was in Garmadon finds its way to Lloyd which causes him to slowly become meaner and more emo. The darkness takes full control of Lloyd and makes him just as evil as his dad, but more powerful since he is still the Green Ninja. The rest of the team is left to figure out who and or what is powerful enough to destroy the evilness in him without harming their friend.
