Centuries ago, the gods decided to interfere with humanity after predicting that if humans continued as they were, they would stray from the path they were meant to walk. So the gods and spirits decided to occasionally change a part of the soul of a few children, one in a few thousand, so that they may have the chance to change the world, making these children not just human but either part god or spirit depending on who changed their soul. These children would be blessed with powers for life, powers depending on which god claimed them. But, every once in a while, a god would mess up and change a soul too much, making there be too much god in them, causing the child's life to fall into ruin with limited control and a mark of this, be it as having cats ears, a purple forked tongue, or ram horns. These people are called akuma no ko, or Devil Children. They are persecuted and discriminated against because of the gods mistakes.

Karasuno VBC is made entirely up of people who are part god and/or spirit, including their managers, coach, and faculty advisor. All except for their beloved captain. But that's a lie. Because even though they think he's normal, he's just hiding his identity as an akuma no ko.
