Claire Whitaker wasn't the type of person you'd expect to go to Juvie. She wasn't violent, read books, had good grades, and she was a nerd inside of school and out. But the day before summer break, her best friend, Carolina, admitted that her ex, one of the schools jock-ish types, had abused her and cheated on her while they were dating.

She did a lot more than hurt him. She beat the ever-loving shit out of him, kicked him in the balls first, kicked him even harder into his neck, and pushed his head into the toilet and hit it against a locker, repeatedly. Then she got a baseball bat to attempt to break his left leg but before before she could she was stopped by a teacher who had heard some of the commotion.

Now, over the summer break and a bit after, she has to spend time in Juvie. That is where she meets a mysterious girl by the name of Maggie, who she shares her Juvie cell with.
