As we fall into the pit of darkness, trust me, hold me tight,
Hold on to the wisp of hope, let me give you light.

-------------------------------------
Fear.
Fear defined Abeer Irfan's life.
Every night, it engulfed her and she drowned into the endless horrors of her past. Every night, she lost a part of her to the evil. Every night, it got worse and worse to the point of no return.
You see, she wasn't alive; she was just breathing.
On one special night, she opened a door, a door hidden in the maze of her horrors. It was on that special night, that she met him. He wasn't a knight in shining armor. He wasn't a superhero. He was a light. He was the guy with impossible green eyes.

"You didn't see anything before. This is what you have seen. This!" My heart is beating frantically hard against my ribs like a bird trying to break out of its cage. Allah... "That is how easy you are to crumble. I'll set you straight, angel. I am done with people like you. I am done with being played with. It's about time you learn a lesson. I am about to make your life hell."
The words I am sorry are lodged in my throat, but I don't want to beg him. I am done begging people for mercy.
"That's more like it."
"You cannot make me feel any worse than I already do," I state what I think all the time.
"Challenge accepted."

When Ziyana Raza's cousin is abandoned by a fiancé who appeared to have loved her very much, it's Ziyana's last straw. A former hopeless romantic-now disillusioned by too many betrayals and heartbreaks-Ziyana abandons all notions of true love and vows to remain single forever. "Forever" meaning as long as her Pakistani Muslim family's patience for her singlehood thins. Besides, she's too busy hating her grueling corporate job as a data analyst, anyway. And as long as she tells herself that true love and the sacred bond of a husband and wife spoken of in the Qur'an is only for a few lucky souls, she'll be fine. But right when she's settling into a somewhat comfortable routine of avoiding men and scoffing at the idea of marriage, Shahzain Shah barrels into her life. Charming, infuriating, and a little too observant, the new BI Manager of her company seems determined to challenge Ziyana's cynicism, missing no opportunity to alert her of how absurd he thinks her "plan" is. On top of that, he's sharp and demanding in the workplace she already hates, making him her thirteenth reason for quitting. But as much as he gets on Ziyana's nerves, he also...somehow knows all the right things to say, the right things to do. Recognizes and appreciates her intellect. Befriends her brother and respects her parents. Makes her laugh even when she's trying desperately to hold it back. She can't help but reminisce that an old version of herself would have thought Shahzain checked all the boxes for a potential spouse. Too bad she's dead set on her mission...right?
