This cycle of episodic stories is focused primarily on the world of the Lower Astral Plane that is a parallel sphere of existence with the mortal physical realm. In the stories, this plane is set mainly in San Francisco. This is a world with its own rules and dangers. Here those who fall away from the process of Reincarnation may wander among strange creatures, slavers and organized crime societies. The organization that protects and guides the lost humans are the Yamadutas. They are the main characters of these tales which focus on their adventures.

Dhoire Ross owns a Scottish Straight cat named Bonnie Prince Charlie whom his family condemns as lazy. However, BPC is secretly a Moon Cat. These are self-aware cats who are able to shift between the mortal and lower astral planes and with skills to hunt down minor nefarius creatures who are the etheric equivalent of rodents. When a couple across the San Francisco Bay evoke an ancient Inugami Yokai for revenge, it unleashes the greatest challenge a Moon Cat can face.
