It's been about a year since Valerie left the Lost Cities. As much as she misses her friends and family, she knows that she can't risk going back. She couldn't live with herself if any of them got hurt because of her... again. 
While exploring the Neutral Territories, she discovers the burnt ruins of a house. Among the rubble and smoking debris, she finds a 10-year-old boy who had once lived there. She takes him in and learns about his past, and the Neverseen's involvement in it. 
They take care of each other as they adjust to life alone in the Neutral Territories - the survivors of the Neverseen's crimes.
