Marine Staff Sergeant Stephanie Zoubareya is on medical leave after breaking the golden rule of the Corps: don't put ghosts in your report. Certainly don't follow them into the Malian desert and fight a fundamentalist militia. (It might not technically be a golden rule, but it should be.) As she contemplates what she's going to do with the rest of her life, she gets an under the table gig protecting a mute archaeologist. All they have to do is drive to New England, check out a statue, spend some of the NSA's money on hotel that looks out onto the sea. But that was before she killed a monster in a New York alleyway, or a religious cult cornered them at a gas station. Now she's worried that Dr. Penny Etrange is more than she seems, that Wickerman Cove has a secret, and that she might not actually be working for the NSA.

A military romantic suspense novel Major Cecelia Livingston isn't a soldier-she's a doctor. A damn good one. Trained in trauma, decorated with credentials, and hardened by deployment after deployment. But none of that matters the second she steps off the chopper and onto the dirt of an unofficial base that technically doesn't exist. Because the man waiting for her isn't interested in her rank. Or her reputation. Or her orders from command. Lieutenant Colonel Rhys Callan runs one of the most elite black ops units in the field-covert, brutal, and untouchable. He doesn't lose men. And six months ago, he buried his medic. He's not about to risk another one just because someone higher up decided to assign him a field doctor with no combat scars and too much heart. She's not welcome. He doesn't trust her. And he's made that painfully clear. But the mission clock is ticking. Tensions are rising. And when everything explodes-as it always does-there'll be no room for weakness, and no room for mistakes. She's determined to earn her place. He's determined to make sure she never gets close enough to try. In a war where survival depends on control, discipline, and silence, what happens when the one person you don't want in your world becomes the only one you can't lose?
