Chase Barnes, previous known as Colette Hargreeves, doesn't refer to himself as normal. First of all, he's trans. Has been ever since he was about fourteen. He also spent his childhood as part of a child superhero team called the Umbrella Academy. But he hated being part of his father's experiment, so he left as soon as he turned eighteen and moved to San Francisco. He left his childhood behind, changed his name, and got married.
He had never planned on going back to his childhood home. That is until he got word that his father had passed away. So he traveled back home, leaving his husband and cat behind to go to the funeral and see the rest of his family after several years.
But when Number Five comes back and warns them of the apocalypse, he begins to think that he should have just stayed home.

Before the umbrella academy, hargreeves simply tried to put powers into one's body. To twist the DNA in such a way that they would have abilities. Therefore he adopted a child, her name was Elizabeth. Soon, she had to ability to turn her body into a gas. However, after that succeeded he got mad with power. He wanted to see if it was possible to make someone immortal. it was much too dangerous to try to on himself, therefore, he chose Elizabeth. Instead of making her immortal, it made her "stuck" in a way. She simply did not age, she was stuck in the body of her 13-year-old self. She would eventually die as her mind aged, but her appearance would stay the same.
