Michael got some information before it happened and Valentina had to shoot him in self-defence. Nathaniel's cover wasn't blown so to keep Valentina safe he faked her death and put her in protective custody. Michael survived the shooting heartbroken that the love of his life betrayed him and certain there was an inside man working against him.
