Twenty-year-old Ellie Tikire didn't expect her long dead grandfather to show up at her wedding, and she definitely didn't expect him to declare her betrothed a murderer. Soon, she finds herself in the 1860's in order to escape her husband, Lukas, who tried to murder her. She learns much about her early family- including why they had the time machine in the first place- from her grandfather William and grandmother Anna. As she pieces her ancestor's past together, it slowly begins to dawn on her that her imminent death might have been better for the world than if she had remained living. But her grandparents claim that they know how her death can be absolved, and soon Ellie must adopt the culture of this time period and lie, cheat, steal, deceive, and kill in order to save her own life back in the present. But playing with time can go horribly wrong, and as Ellie finds that she can do more with the power of time than just save herself, she causes both trouble and redemption in the past. When Ellie feels it is safe to return to the future, will it be anything like she has plotted it out to be in past? Or will she feel the need to go back in time, time and time again, until her life is just how she wants it?

One moment, Emma Scott is in her college room in 2015, and the next she's in 1921 falling in love with an ex-soldier with a charming smile and a secret... Emma's an old hand at time travel: the first time she was pulled backwards she was ten years old. She can sense the memories that stone, fabric and wood have soaked up: usually she just sees them, but sometimes she ends up living them. She knows the drill: (1) avoid getting pulled backwards in the first place; (2) avoid the object that's pulled you backwards; (3) prevent the memory that imprints on the object, or, if all that fails, (4) wait it out until you're back in the right time. The problem is that the object was an old ring that her Granny Alice bequeathed to her, and Emma last saw it on the finger of her great grandmother, fleeing into a crowded London street. Now Emma is trying to find the ring and go back to her own time, but her great grandmother has vanished, and meanwhile there's Charlie Lawrence who's making Emma wonder if she even wants to go back at all...
