Golden Hatfield had been enjoying a classically unremarkable, painfully predictable, but otherwise copacetic trajectory through his 20's. He was raised as a "golden" child; the third in a family of five with loving parents who built an upwardly mobile, suburban lifestyle. Golden spent his youth excelling in sports and school while sharing positive relationships across peer groups in his community. He dated his college sweetheart well into his late twenties as he built a career in finance before finally asking her to marry him before his just before his 28th birthday. Maria McIntyre came from a volatile background before she settled into the apple pie-lifestyle that Golden offered her. Her charisma and beauty blended well with Golden's stand-up reputation, and created the relationship envy of a community obsessed with portrayal of stability and success. By the time he was 29 and she 28, Foretown NJ's favorite long term couple tied the knot. Then, just days before his first anniversary and thirtieth birthday, Golden found himself stunned and navigating blindly through a thick fog of nuclear fallout. Maria was kicked out of the house, rumors circulated, and Golden found himself behind the wheel of a vehicle out of control. Unable to slow down, he headed straight into the eye of a storm. In search of meaning within chaos, Golden feels his way through a post-twenties suburban existence turned upside down. Not old enough to qualify for midlife crises and not young enough to hide from responsibility, his journey takes him through equally perilous landscapes such as oppressive cocktail parties, inner-city streets, the Andean High Jungles of Peru, and most dangerously - his own bedroom. Golden's passage across unfamiliar terrain is only less peculiar than his exploration of the deepest corners within his own mind and soul. It will prove to be the awaking Golden Hatfield never dreamed of...

"Back to this hellhole, huh?" "I wouldn't call it a hellhole" He mutters. "Oh, but I would." I snap harshly. He almost flinches. "(Y/n), I'm sorry. It wasn't supposed to get out of hand like that..." I cut him off. "I know. But I can't believe you would ever think of doing that. It's cruel!" He looks away in shame. "I'm sorry." He says again. "It's not me you should have apologized to." I say, hot tears threatening to spill. I didn't know who to feel about him. I was so completely in love with him, maybe I still am, but they were my best friends. I just wish everything could have been different.
