Cara Pritchard, a fun-loving and free-wheeling girl who has always been the black sheep of her family. Her older brother can whistle with crackers in his mouth and her younger brother can do so much more than she could do at that age. Cara can't do anything like that. She's tried and tried to do something to impress her parents but nothing worked.
An opportunity came where she could hang out at the town carnival with her tight-knit group of friends, but then the news came that her whole family had died in a horrible fire. Talk about karma. Cara gets taken to another group of kids who had also had their parents die in a fire, but at least they had siblings.
Together, they embark on a journey that sends them from guardian to guardian, problem to problem. Along the way, secrets are revealed, emotions are uncovered and Cara's easy-going exterior is threatened along with her life.

Together, they begin looking into the mystery that has plagued both sets of siblings since the deaths of their parents. But of course, nothing stays safe in the Baudelaires' world for long, and Count Olaf, also known as their problems, isn't far behind. Halfway between the bleak beginning to their story and the enigmatic end, Count Olaf and his troupe chase the Baudelaires to four more locations, each more far-flung than the last.
