This is an excellent horror-mystery story. Its unique story structure and constant mindfuck creates an engaging mystery. The protagonist, Keiichi Maebara has just moved into the sleepy village of Hinamizawa. Despite making many new friends, Hinamizawa holds a dark secret. For the last four years, during the annual "Cotton Drifting" festival, someone is murdered and another person disappears without a trace. The villagers attribute this to the guardian deity Oyashirosama's curse. Keiichi then realizes that his friends all have connections to the victims and the village isn't all what it seems . . . Shoko Fujii is dead. She was only sixteen. No one talked to Shoko or knew who she was because she rarely talked to anyone. She kept to herself most of the time. She only had one friend and that was popular and outgoing Gaku Higashi. No one understood their friendship. It was unlikely that the most popular kid in school would ever be friends with an outcast like Shoko by choice. When Shoko died it was quickly filed as a suicide but Gaku didn't believe that. The Shoko he knew would never kill herself. He made it his duty to find out the truth. He knew something wasn't right and as time goes on and he finds out the truth about Shoko Fujii's death, he snaps. The grief of finding out the truth ignites something in Gaku. A trail of violence and terror he leaves behind will never be forgotten.
