Old people are cool.
Well, okay. Yes, they kinda reek of prunes and diapers...
But hey, cut them some slack.
They're like ninety years old and they could still kick your butt in a game of checkers.
Trust me, I thought I was pretty freaking amazing at checkers until I started volunteering at Heartland's Home of the Elderly.
Anyways, some people have a passion to save the endangered purple tree octopus. Some devote every waking hour to make sure our planet is safe. I like happen to have a strong liking for old people.
In fact, I made probably one of my best friends in that elderly home, Mr. Wilfred Noble. He used to be my old neighbor until his daughter and granddaughter decided it wasn't safe for him to live without assisted living.
So, they moved him to Heartland's Home for the Elderly.
When I younger, he would tell me stories of a man who traveled among the stars in a bright blue box. Whenever there was trouble, this man would go and save the poor civilians. He was the last of his species, the Timelords. Even though from the outside, he may have seemed happy with his life, this man had suffered many losses and was very sad on the inside.
I used to believe in this man with all of my heart. I would wait for him by my windowsill until the stars came out.
Some nights, my parents would let me go over and look through Wilfred's telescope to try and spy this man.
As I got older, the stories of him seemed less and less believable. And that's when it happened.
This silly fairy tale came to my windowsill just like I had always hoped for.
Except, I hadn't expected so much broken glass....

But what she did not expect was to show up on the first day of school to all three of her friends now in relationships. Fighting for their attention, catching some new and confusing feelings for long-time frenemy James, and wading through the pressures of post-high-school plans all have Lara reeling. And to make matters worse, Lara's beautiful and untrustworthy cousin conveniently appears and wiggles her way right between her and James' budding relationship. Feeling like a third wheel in more ways than one, Lara must learn to accept that change is inevitable, love is complicated, and being the odd one out is sometimes where inner power is found.
