Ever since Newt met Thomas, he loved him. He knew life was in a crisis and the world was going extinct but why not waste what little the world had left and embrace the fact that he had Thomas. Thomas made Newt believe. Believe in himself, believe in life, believe there is a purpose to all of this and he made Newt believe in love.
Thomas was the reason Newt was happy and his life would be depressing without him.

The idea was Thomas' but if he'd known what was to come, both good and very, very bad, he may never have asked anyone to go. That would mean all of the close moments the two boys shared, like when they had lent in to kiss, would never have happened. The question was, would it have been worth it to call the whole trip off, when it would prevent Newt and Thomas from falling for each other but also stop the storm from causing so much pain for the boys?
