Instead of letting her father die she absorbed the hollow herself. Of course her family disagreed with her plan and would have stopped her if they could, and that's why she snapped their necks and absorbed the hollow anyways. 

It could have killed her but she managed to control it She saved her family, and now she wants some time to herself. So she takes her best friend and hits the road.
