Kitty's two older brothers are both at war, and she wakes every day with the fear of their deaths, yet knows that nothing will ever happen to them.
Reality forces Kitty to grow quickly, and learn that life is not as easy, or as simple as she once believed.
A short story written for the National Trust of Australia (WA) Valuing Our Heritage 2013 Photography and Story Competition.
This is not a true story, though is based around the lives of a real family, who did live through the hardships of war.
The house they lived in (Woodbridge House) still stands today, with many of the original families possessions inside, including letters sent from the two sons at war to their mother, and the medallion received by their mother after their passing.
This short story received a Highly Commended award.

"Look Stone, Im not that 6 year old you can just boss around and fuck over anymore, I can take care of myself, Ive been doing that for my whole life so far, so why not the rest, so either order something or get the fuck out", I said to him getting faster and faster as I spoke. At War
"Revenge by young men is considered victory, but old men who stay at home in times of war, and mothers who have sons to lose know better." -Chief Seattle This is an anti- war epistolary novella written for ONC 2022. Prompts 5 and 74 have been used, with more focus on the latter. . . . In the blissfully quiet moments that sometimes descend around them, when the other side is as weary as they are, a conscripted soldier writes. There is much to write about - fellow soldiers, gunfire and miles and miles trod with sockless feet and tattered boots squelching in mud and dying grass. But more than that, there is the longing for hearth and home, and words for things long left behind. The soldier travels three thousand miles longing for home. The soldier finds it the day before death. . . . This story has been featured in the reading lists of @WattpadMilitaryFiction now! . . .
