In his youth, DS Roy Pilkington had been nicknamed "Winklepicker" Roy, because of his fondness for pointed Italian-leather shoes. Over the decades that followed, his taste for that particular type of footwear diminished and so did his nickname. Nowadays everyone just called him "Winkle".

Ten years a widower, estranged from his only daughter, Winkle only has his job left to keep him sane, even if they have taken him off the streets and consigned him to desk duties in a dusty basement. His life couldn't get any worse.

Then he is told he has to retire because of cutbacks.

Then he notices the blood in his urine.

Then his daughter becomes the victim of a serial killer.

Unable to be a part of the official investigation, Winkle determines to solve this one last case even if it kills him.

As the body count rises, the only clue lies in a police report about a Victorian murderer called Peter Cheshire and the only suspect seems to be a dead horror rocker called Barry Blood.

With time running out, Winkle has no choice but to rely on the mysterious Nosferatu society whose members believe the imbibing of human blood will make them virtually immortal. Dismissing their beliefs as nonsense, Winkle believes that one of their members may just be the murderer that the press have dubbed "The Slasher". It is a belief that will lead him to a final confrontation with an unhinged young man called Robbie Hutton, a confrontation that Winkle has no expectations of surviving.

Rob Beeton spends his days sitting behind a desk investigating patterns of household waste disposal in Hertfordshire. In the evenings he balances arguing with his wife with making silly voices for his infant son's cuddly toys. By night he sleeps alone in the spare room next to the wardrobe with the broken hinges while he wonders if the garage door will ever actually fix itself. Meanwhile, Lisa Curly works in a library in the most deserted fishing town in Scotland. The man she shares her life with spends more time on his boat than with her and the last time he touched her, the internet was still using dial-up connection. A few houses down the street her mother is dying of something that is most likely cancer, but the old girl refuses to get it diagnosed. Rob and Lisa lost contact after leaving secondary school at sixteen, but, courtesy of the internet, found each other again and, more importantly, have been able to locate online those eight pupils who tormented them the most during their younger years. With five dead and only three to go, Rob and Lisa's murderous revenge is nearly coming to an end. However, when the improbably-named Detective Peter Piccolo moves into the house next to Rob, something definitely appears amiss. Is this the most surreal police sting ever contrived, or is it just an enormous coincidence for Rob and Lisa? Is Piccolo trying to be their friend, carry out some sort of undercover surveillance, or is he just an even bigger monster than the two of them combined? Either way, the brooding copper is a massive spanner in their works and something will have to be done if Rob and Lisa are going to literally lay the pasts to rest and move on with their lives.

What she doesn't know is that Elena has spent the last two years of her life hiding her worst fear from her family. She has secrets no one knows about, secrets she's been hiding to keep those around her safe. However, what Elena least expects is for her two worlds to collide all because of two boys she meets at school. * * * Elena headed towards the door. She was about to turn the doorknob when his next words froze her in place. "How do you think you'll sister will react if she finds out what you do?" asked Lucas. She slowly turned to face the two with a raised brow, "Meaning?" "Think about it," urged Cole, "How do you think everyone would react if they found out what you do during your spare time, especially your sister." She narrowed her eyes ."Are you blackmailing me?" she asked crossing her arms and raising her chin. "No, I never said that." Cole held up his hands yet grinning mischievously. "We're just saying that it would be in your best interest, along with ours if you joined us." shrugged Lucas. "You can't prove anything," she bluffed. A devious smile speared across Cole's face while Lucas grinned wickedly, "Oh, we both know you don't believe that." ------------------- The events and places are completely fictional along with the characters.
