Emmett Hayes stays awake most nights. Despite his old age and his tired eyes he needs to stay awake.
His wife, his best friend and soulmate, is reaching her last breath.
Even though others tell him to rest and let go, he can't.
The intense feeling of knowing someone close is about to die fills her body everyday. His job is to simply guide and comfort them to their final resting place.
He walks alongside an elder lady passing the rooms of other patients in the hospital. As he passes her room their eyes meet.
"Did she just see me," he wonders as he walks back to her room to see.
"Those eyes, why is he here now though," she asks herself as she stands from her bed and walks to the hall. Their eyes lock as they meet at the doorway and they barely stop each other from hitting.
