Life sucks. It's not fair. Nothing works out how you want it. People die or leave, and sometimes we wish we could do the same. But that's not how it works. We can't just pack everything up and run because we would be even worse off with nobody to pick us up off the ground when we fall. So we pack our minds up in boxes and pretend that we're not miserable. It's hard, but it works. That is, until the boxes start tumbling and spilling out their contents, disturbing our false peace.

That's basically how it goes for Maddox. Loss after loss has forced him to pack his boxes and leave them on a shelf. Until his best friend has an accident and his boxes start tumbling and spilling out everything he thought he was done with for good.
