At the age of 16, the given witch or wizard will go through a creature inheritance (if that person has creature blood in their family line). 
Severus Snape goes through an early (and very painful) creature inheritance, and has trouble finding his mate, or rather, coming to terms with who his mate is.
James Potter is having the same trouble with his inheritance.
