Lady Brigid of Prim, known as Birdie amongst the few people she is close to, is a woman who's never quite fit in to the trappings of her noble birth. The third daughter of the ruler of a minor kingdom, she is determined to live on her own terms - inspired by the recent Renaissance and deeply in love with her brothers' tutor, a gentle and intelligent man who adores her.

Just as the two make plans to leave the kingdom to live a simple life as commoners, the rugged and aloof Prince Reidar arrives to marry Brigid's eldest sister, Serra. Rumored to be as cold as the landscape of his icy northern kingdom, Reidar is drawn to the intelligent and fearless Brigid instead.

For reasons she cannot understand, he arranges to marry her in Serra's place, drawing her into a Northern world filled with strange customs, beliefs tied to the earth, and the ancient gods.

At first resistant, Brigid slowly finds her place in Reidar's world, dedicating herself to bettering the lives of the women in his kingdom, until a mysterious outsider threatens the delicate balance they have created.
