One day while he's at school a radioactive continental earthquake turns North America into a chaotic apocalyptic wasteland, where those who survive the radiation from, what is now known as "the quakes", are either killed by radioactive burns, or they are changed in ways no one though possible.

Some people weren't able to handle it's affects, others have been changed. Everyone who survived was given a supernatural ability. Finn doesn't remember anything outside of the hospital, the first thing he could remember was the chemical tank. He's not sure why he's put in there so often, but isn't allowed to ask many questions. He's eventually introduced to the rest of the gifted, he explains to Hallie his time in isolation, not understanding how important he's become.
