The divided  states of America,  after the war over slavery, the USA became divided. the revolution crumbled and the government seized control... those who resisted were wiped, the government left civilization two choices...... bend to their rules or face the consequences.Some who resisted  escaped and made a life for themselves in the underground cities, others weren't so lucky. The pure were given life, the upure was given the harsh burden of being marked at birth. Those who were marked were given two choices....surrender their freedom and live a life up above......or perish down below.... the law was absolute.....it was corrupted and damaging... Everyone has choices to make.....In-between was never an option.....but Atlas planned to change that even if it killed her.
