Charlie Kingman was a young boy abused by his foster parents and made into a slave. However, he wasn't aware that it shouldn't be happening and was just thankful he was protected from the world.

Another thing he wasn't aware of was that he was a spark. He always knew he had abilities from how quickly he healed from his beatings, but he never knew how strong he actually was.

When he was seven, his foster parents took a beating slightly too far and almost killed him. Well, they did kill him but he awoke with a big enough burst of magical energy to fry everyone in the house.

This happened to be the same time Klaus and Elijah Mikaelson were in town. When they discovered the boy, they were close to killing him (again) because of his magic until a nearby covern of witches informed them of how dangerous that would be.

These witches took in the boy and taught him about his powers until he was 17 and they were all killed. The boy awoke soon after, luckily before the police arrived and was taken into foster care where he was taken in by the one and only Sheriff Forbes in Mystic Falls.
