It's later realized that you are trapped within Purgatory, the main division of Hell, and you need to do whatever you can to get back home.

If they fail these tasks, they're stuck back in line with no short cuts. May be a tad confusing to read because the perspectives bounce from first to third person depending on who's narrating.
