Emery stared at the man's shadowed figure as he grabbed a paper from his desk. Much like the papers tacked onto the board in the grand hall, it was a removal request. She stared down at it, glancing at the capture reward, eyes widening. "You made it sound so terrible. I'm in," she smiled, a conniving and untrustworthy expression.
"You skipped straight to the payout?"
"Of course, one hundred dakros is certainly worth my time," Emery replied, fearless as she folded up the flyer.
"Read the paper, Miss Benoit. I would not want more of my top members not returning," he sighed, pulling out his own copy and reading along as Emery got more and more silent.
"What is it you're exactly asking me to do?" She asked in confusion.
"There's a creature in Devonshire, Budwin. Your old home, I believe?"
"I'll be burned at the stake," Emery screeched, pushing a hand through her hair.
"No, you won't. I have secured you a position several miles into the forest of Devonshire," he replied.
"What is it I'm hunting, anyhow?" She groaned, massaging her forehead as she felt a headache start to throb at her temples.
"None of my scouts have returned with any pertinent information. For all you know it could be a mutated Reva Devil," he replied.
"Then why such a high reward?" She questioned, tilting her head to the side in a birdlike way.
"The town's been picked off to nothing. Trade stopped and Budwin is losing money,"
"And would that be so bad?"
"I want revenge as well. This... creature took my rank twenty and rank fourteen," he said passively.
"As I said before, Your Grace, I'm in,"

"I think you have lost your mind," Soren suddenly muttered.
Then it happened: Annika grinned. A glowing warmth lit inside, heating her cold interior. There was something extraordinary about the simplicity put into a grin. The anguish lessoned, and suddenly anything was possible. Surely the sky could fall if Annika could smile?
"What makes you say that?" She asked as she continued her movements. The grin acted as a soothing balm on her aching heart. Annika might've been crazy to become so easily uplifted by an everyday facial expression, but crazy seemed like a much better term to be than slave.
"Only a lunatic would approach me in my slumber." His eyes remained shut, and he didn't object to her petting, so Annika didn't stop.
"Well... you wouldn't know if you were asleep?"
"Mmm," the sound vibrated like a guttural hum, "I awoke the second you entered."
"Did you?" Annika asked as she turned her head to study his face, but this time, his eyes were open, revealing those beautiful pits of colorless depths.
